Description

Feather Celosia is an herbaceous annual plant.

Leaves are tender and smooth to touch, lanceolate to elliptic shape. Older leaves have a broader base compared to young leaves which are narrower in shape. Stems are fleshy stems and cultivars with red flowers may have red stems.

Feather Celosia flowers are in the Amaranthaceae family and are basically of two groups. The variety shown here is the plumosa group. It’s the more popular of the two, often grown in flower beds, containers, and indoors as house plants. Soft, deeply veined leaves cover the fleshy stems that hold the feathery blooms upright, above the foliage. The vibrant plumes of colors are eye-catching and look spectacular when grouped together in containers.

Find a spot for Feather Celosia in a sunny window or scoot the container outdoors for show-stopping color on your porch or patio. These striking Feather Celosia flowers thrive in hot, sunny conditions. Easily grown in humus, moderately fertile, consistently moist, well-drained soils

Flowers bloom throughout summer into fall on erect stems clad with spear-shaped green to red leaves. The flower heads sometimes project an artificial, almost plastic-like appearance that, to some gardeners, may border on the gaudy.

Since inflorescence color does not come from the corolla, inflorescence’s can be cut, hung to dry, and it retains an attractive color when utilized as dried flowers or in floral arrangements. This plant tolerates dry porous soils.

The leaves, young stems and young inflorescence are used for stew, as they soften up readily in cooking. The leaves also have a soft texture and a mild spinach-like taste.
