The Boston Fern is an elegant Victorian favourite, sometimes called the Sword fern. It has graceful, arching, green fronds with a ruffled appearance that is best displayed in a hanging basket or on a stand where it can cascade over the edge.
The Boston Fern will not only bring an air of calm to your home. It is one of the best known plants for purifying the air and regulating humidity.
blozem hints
Time for a trim! Cut away older, yellowing or dried fronds from around the sides at the base of the plant. This will encourage vigorous new growth. Do not chop the top.
Happy when hot and humid! This fern prefers a wet, warm and bright environment to thrive, such as the bathroom or kitchen.
Spotted something spotty? Don’t panic, the brown spots on the underside of its leaves are spores, and naturally occur when the plant reproduces.
Light
Nephrolepis are reasonably comfortable in a wide range of light conditions, anywhere from bright, indirect sunlight to light shade.
Watering
Keep the soil moist at all times. Water when the surface becomes slightly dry. Do not overwater and use lukewarm, soft water where possible.
Temperature
The Boston Fern prefers average household temperatures: between 16-24°C, but do not allow to fall lower than 12°C. Avoid cold draughts.
Humidity
Prefers higher humidity and doesn’t do well in dry air. Do not place near radiators, etc. Group with other plants in your kitchen or bathroom to help increase humidity levels.
