This species is a tree-like cactus in the Opuntia family, known for its flat, paddle-shaped cladodes (pads) stacked on top of each other. Unlike typical prickly pears, Consolea grows upright like a small tree, often reaching 6–15 feet (2–5 meters) in height outdoors in the right climate. The plant has a sculptural, architectural look and can form a striking silhouette in xeriscapes or desert-style gardens.
