Mistletoe cactus is a bizarre and wonderful tropical chain cactus, with thin, spiky, pencil-like stems, small yellow-white flowers and white globular fruit. Very much on trend and great for hanging baskets, so pucker up!
Although Rhipsalis is a cactus, don’t think dry, arid landscapes. These are jungle cactus, native to the hot, steamy rainforests of Central and South America. They need warmth and humidity.
blozem Hints
🍀Hot n’ humid! The Mistletoe Cactus likes humidity so pop it in your bathroom to soak up all that steam.
🍀Merry and moist! To keep your Mistletoe Cactus happy, ensure the soil is moist at all times, but be careful not to overwater as this can lead to leaf discoloration.
🍀Bright and beautiful! Ensure your Rhipsalis gets a few hours of sunlight in the early morning or evening to reach its full glorious potential.
Light
Bright filtered or dappled light. A few hours of morning or early evening sunlight a day would not go amiss. Avoid harsh midday and afternoon sun.
Watering
Not drought tolerant, so keep the soil moist at all times. Water once the top of the soil has become slightly dry. Ensure adequate drainage.
Humidity
Good humidity is required for the Mistletoe Cactus. Mist frequently or relocate to a typically steamier room.
Ideal for kitchens and bathrooms.
Height & Growth Rate
The heteroclada is an average to fast-grower and can achieve heights of 1 metre, although the stems are fragile so may break off before this point.
Toxicity
Rhipsalis are non-toxic. Safe to keep around children and pets.
